What We See
"Nature" is what we see--
The Hill—the Afternoon-- Squirrel—Eclipse— the Bumble bee-- Nay—Nature is Heaven-- Nature is what we hear-- The Bobolink—the Sea-- Thunder—the Cricket-- Nay—Nature is Harmony-- Nature is what we know-- Yet have no art to say-- So impotent Our Wisdom is To her Simplicity. -Emily Dickinson |
The more dictionary version of nature is that it is anything that is independent of humanity. According to Emily Dickinson, nature is what we see, what we hear, and what we know. She wasn't rejecting the former definition, she was just romanticizing it. I think that the Fraze Pavilion of Kettering is a great example of both versions, with some extra humanity in the mix. I think nature can become more special when society is involved.
