Since Al Gore released the documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth”, the green movement has been growing. With each year that has passed, more information and statistics have become available, making climate models more reliable. We will explain some of these new statistics as well as explaining some of the weather and climate patterns that Al Gore talks about in making his models and how skeptics get the wrong view. We will discuss impacts that have happened to society’s emotions and how the new views of America has impacted climate change after the documentary. Gore’s presentation seems to be greatly supported by a vast amount of evidence, but how accurate is this information? The key to most of his information is represented by models. However, he fails to reveal that these models are built from scenarios that can happen, but it cannot predict the future. For example, when he showed the projection of the increase in temperature and projected the 2050 carbon ppm (parts per million), there is a certain level of uncertainty, due to possible restrictions or lack thereof. Since the release of the documentary in 2006, some scientific data has changed, as well as society's view on the issue. Now, with a few more years of data collected and advancements in the technology we use, we have more certainty. We are now very close to 400 ppm of CO2 (Henson). The acronym, ppm, mean parts per million. We have steadily been on track with what Gore presented; however, with the recent recession, we have slightly leveled off at 390 ppm (Finster 2012). We are also able to see the effects happening more and more. For example, the Athabasca glacier in Jasper National Park, Canada, has receded almost a mile in the past 125 years, meaning it has lost almost half of its volume (Henson 2011). Also, the North Pole had a record breaking warm year in 2007, allowing the fabled Northwest Passage to be open for ocean-going vessels. Moreover, in 2008, 2009, and 2010, the passage opened up again, all of which has happened since Al Gore’s documentary. Another key point that Al Gore brings up in his documentary is that the temperature of Earth has risen higher than it ever has before. The earth has had weather patterns and changes since the beginning of time. How and why those weather patterns happen have a lot to do with the earth itself and beyond. The earth gets its warmth from the sun. How warm or how cool the earth's climate is greatly dependent on how close or far away from the sun it is. Our distance from the sun can be broken down into three important properties: Earth’s Tilt, Earth’s Orbit, and Earth’s axis (Henson 2011). But as we know, the atmosphere is also an important determinant to how warm and how cool the earth can get. Certain gases, such as CO2, are in the atmosphere and are capable of absorbing energy from the sun and heating up. As we continue to emit more CO2" this adds to the heating of the atmosphere(Henson 2011). There are many perspectives on climate change in general, and “An Inconvenient Truth" not only made people aware of the examples of climate change that were previously discussed, but helped bring about social change on the environmental front. Elements like Gore's sad story about his son, the clip of the polar bear trying to land on a small piece of ice, and the music throughout the movie manipulated the audience's emotions to help move people to action. This worked so well that people now are making more of an effort to help the environment and reduce climate change, even if they haven't even seen the movie. Of course, there were other factors into the growing green movement, but this documentary was seen as the start of it. Teachers are starting to tell young students about how to take care of the earth in school, so even if people only have a vague idea of the effects of CO2, they know good ways to reduce their "carbon footprint." Even though Gore's doom and gloom predictions are still coming true, society has changed in a way that there is more hope for a positive impact on the environment. Being an environmentalist is no longer a radical career choice. In fact, it has become a bit of a staple in our society. A person only needs to do is a quick Google search to find many environmental organizations, charities, and even online blogs with tips on how to lead a “green lifestyle.” Thanks to Al Gore, people are now finding a connection with nature by trying to preserve it. “An Inconvenient Truth” was the core stepping stone to making the masses aware of global warming. While it still isn’t the cause with the most attention, more people have taken it upon themselves to do what they can to help. We only have one planet, and it is important to take care of it. Al Gore’s documentary helped people to see just how much our planet needs help to restore it to its former health. There is only one planet Earth, and if everyone learns the right information about what can be done to help it, there is a chance that the planet can be saved.
